This microcourse examines the ‘pedagogy’ of online teaching and learning, defined simply as the art and science of teaching. Specifically, it refers to the assortment of strategies, methods and techniques employed in teaching knowledge, skills and values to students online. Oftentimes educators get carried away by the new technologies and ignore pedagogy which is the essence of successful online learning. Focus is on what is pedagogy, the steps involved in designing online courses, what is active learning, different types of learning activities incorporated in online learning.
Also discussed are the major concepts, issues and strategies involved in assessing student learning in the online environment. Alternative and authentic methods are explored such as the take-home exam, un-proctored objective tests, minute paper, audio & video presentations, e-portfolios, quizzes and so forth. Various issues and challenges of online assessment such as authentication, academic honesty and others are discussed.
